****** Dear data journalists! ******

I am looking for you as potential interview or collaboration partner at Dataharvest 2015!

Two months ago I started working on my Ph.D. thesis 'Visual Analytics in Data-driven Journalism' at the University of Vienna (VALiD Project). My background is in software engineering and computer science. The focus of my research is on supporting journalists in analyzing their data and simplifying the process of finding hidden stories. For me, the most interesting although challenging kind of data is 'unstructured text data'. A well-known research example of Visual Text Analytics for journalistic purposes is The Overview Project. A tool invented to analyze 400,000 WikiLeaks Iraq war reports by visually clustering them.

At Dataharvest 2015 I would like to talk to you and hear about your personal 'data workflow', your problems and your needs: What data tasks are hard to perform? Which ones usually take too long? Do you know tools for analyzing loads of text documents which seem to provide rich functionality but poor usability, especially when being used by non-technicians? Are there specific data types which often make you struggle? ...

I need your input to decide which topic(s) to focus my future research on. I am open for everything: questions, conversations, observations (of you interacting with particular datasets or tools), further collaborations... or just a short coffee break during two sessions :)

I know... all this analysis stuff sounds a bit complicated. The term 'data analysis' itself seems to be quite dry and mathematical. No fear! :) My goal is to find more easy, intuitive and even funny ways for interacting with large datasets. There are other options doing analysis than just looking at a spreadsheet and applying statistical formulas. With interactive visualization, the exploration of data can be more like playing a computer game than doing statistics. Visual Analytics builds on our preattentive perceptual system. There is a close connection between intuitive perception and logical reasoning.

It would be very cool to talk to you! I'll be part of several J-Lab slots as well as the pre-conference Hackathon. For questions, feedback, input, output, whatever: Send me an email or join one of the purple slots marked in my conference schedule below.

See you in Brussels - Elena
